Ballet Balanchine 22 mars 2011

On 22nd of March 2011, Bordeaux International School with the Secondary class students went to “Grand Théâtre” to watch a performance of the ballet Balanchine.

The theatre itself, was quite impressive with elegant green seats. A number of balconies decorated in a golden colour gave us an impression of the 18^th century when the theatre was built .There was also a big fresco of angels on the ceiling which gave a warm feeling to the room. In the middle there was a large stage. It was simple with not many details only the background lit by the stage lights. A small orchestra was situated under the stage so you could only see the conductor standing and waving his baton above them.

The first performance ”Apolon” was danced to the Violin concerto of Igor Stravinsky. A highly skilled male dancer started the performance pretending to play the instrument followed by precise and elegant movements. As the music played on, three girl dancers started to appear on the stage, making smooth movements and shapes with their legs and arms. The amazing shape they made was when their hands were interwoven with each other, in a really complicated form but done flawlessly.

One girl was carrying a harp, the second one a mask and the third one something that looked like a letter or a book. It was really interesting because they were making a story while dancing. They were wearing white leotards with white tights.

“Les Tempéraments” I found more amusing. This time, the girls were wearing black leotards with white tights which looked more sophisticated and serious. Also, the choreography was more diverse and harder to do. I found it outstanding.

Victor Brisson ( CM2/LMS1) a passé 3 jours à Bilbao en tant que délégué de BIS au Conseil Municipal des Enfants de Bordeaux. Voici son récit : 23/3/11 We had to be at the Cours d’Albret at 6h45. When we arrived in Bilbao, we went to the Mairie and we saw Bilbao’s Director of Education. We visited the Mairie. After lunch, we visited the exhibition of Shanghai. We saw an animation film in the dark and watched the little model city (in plastic) light up when that bit of the City was in the film. Unfortunately however, there was a power cut and we had to leave the exhibition early! After, we went to the hostel where we slept. 24/3/11 The next day we went to the office Building which organizes the Port of Bilbao. The lady in charge of the Port explained to us the history of the port and how it works. After, we went to the office of the Metro Bilbao and we even went into the driver’s cabin of one of the subway trains! For lunch, we ate “pinchos”: a typical lunch in Bilbao. Then we visited the old area of the city. We went to the Guggenheim and then we went to the French Institute to explain to the adults what the Conseil Municipal des Enfants is, and what we do in it. After that, we went to a restaurant with Spanish children and returned back to the hostel. 25/3/11 On the last day, we went to a school near Bilbao to explain to the children what the Conseil Municipal des Enfants is, and the class then explained to us what they did in their class. “Blood Brothers” by Willy Russell

On March 17th, Upper Middle school read the play as part of their literature input and then decided they would like to produce a shortened version of the play for performance. The class chose the scenes they thought were the most important and substituted the missing links by narrators. The play was produced in English. With the exception of 4 students, all the class has been learning English as a second language. The play was performed to both the secondary and primary schools. (A.Desmond)

This year we had so many good entries that it was difficult to choose the best ones in each category. We were particularly pleased with the number of students for whom English is not their maternal language and with the quality of the entries submitted by them. We have also had a small number of entries in French and in Spanish which were also very pleasing. (A.Desmond)

Sailing

I sail through the warm summer air,

I feel the wind in my hair.
The water, splashing against the side of the boat,

Feeling the fresh sea in my throat.
The wind is getting stronger,

The waves are getting longer.

The storm is rising,

The wind is icing,

And I start thinking,

What if I am sinking?

I carefully tighten the sail,

I hope it won’t fail.

I am speeding across the lake,

The sails start to shake,

I tighten them more,

And carefully sail to shore.
I tie the boat,

And I can see it float peacefully on the waves.
The storm is over,

The waves are getting lower,

No wind no more,

No storm no more,

Just the calming silence of the warm, summer night.

Lower Middle School Second Language, in Drama: created three sketches through improvisation and script writing, on three legends: Arachne & Athena, Daedalus & Icarus, Theseus & the Minotaur. Pouvez-vous les reconnaître???

English Second Language Project with Lower Middle-School

The project has been centred on the Ancient Greeks and included input from both the History and English departments. The class studied three of the myths linked to Greek mythology; Icarus and Daedalus, Theseus and the Minotaur, Arachne, They also studied how the Greeks lived, the food they ate, the origins of the Olympic Games, and the artistic contributions they left the world. The class made artefacts out of clay, made food using original Greek recipes, and devised some short plays for which they wrote the scripts. Furthermore they each made a Power Point presentation on one aspect of this project. The following photos illustrate the food they cooked and their Power Point presentation.

Exposición de Litografías de Miró

Los alumnos de la clase de español GCSE fuimos al Instituto Cervantes el pasado mes de Diciembre para ver una exposición de litografías de Miró un pintor Español , nacido en Barcelona, el 20 de abril de 1893 y fallecido en Palma de Mallorca, el 25 de diciembre de 1983. Además de ser pintor, era escultor, grabador y ceramista. La serie de litografías aparecieron en la revista “Derrière le Miroir” dirigida por Aimé Maeght. Me gusto mucho lo que vimos porque era muy bonito y también porque parecían dibujos infantiles, a mí siempre me ha fascinado su estilo. A mis compañeras también les gusto mucho. Nos encantó la exposición. Después fuimos a la biblioteca para mirar más fotos y buscar información sobre Miró. Cuando nos teníamos que ir no queríamos pero al final estábamos contentas. Le agradecemos mucho a Parlys nuesta profesora por habernos llevado.

Le Jeudi 17 Décembre, les Secondaires se sont rendus à la Banque Alimentaire. Avec les autres bénévoles, ils ont aidé à trier de la nourriture donnée par les Hyper Marchés et par leur clients, pendant trois bonnes heures. Cela leur a permis de comprendre comment cette association était bien organisée dans la collecte et le tri des produits alimentaires et autres. Fiers de leur soutien à la Banque Alimentaire, ils sont prêts à recommencer.

Le jeudi 2 décembre, après avoir collecté de la nourriture pour la Banque Alimentaire, et nous nous y sommes rendus pour la distribuer . Nous remercions pour les parents qui ont apporté aide et soutien.

Le jeudi 17 décembre, une vingtaine d'élèves du Secondaire se sont rendus à la Banque Alimentaire. Avec les autres bénévoles, nous avons aidé à trier de la nourriture donnée par les hyper marchés et par leurs clients, pendant trois bonnes heures. Dans l’entrepôt il faisait assez froid mais comme on a bien travaillé, on n'en a pas souffert. Cela nous a permis de comprendre comment cette association était bien organisée dans la collecte et le tri des produits alimentaires et autres. Fiers de notre soutien à la Banque Alimentaire,nous sommes prêts à recommencer.
